Gujarat to get Zonal office of Drug Controller of India for speedy clearances
Registration of organization involved in Clinical research (CROs) will be
soon mandatory

" Keeping in view the concentration of pharmaceutical, medical devices and growing clinical research organizations in the state, the central government has decided to upgrade the status of Drug Controller office in Gujarat region to Zonal office. This would mean lot of convenience and speedy clearance, and approval for the pharmaceutical, medical devices and clinical research industry based in Gujarat ." announced Mr Surinder Singh, Drug Controller general of India from New Delhi, at the opening session of 3-day premier Exhibition & Network Event for Fine and Specialty Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals industries, 'InformExIndia 2009' which began today at the University Grounds in Ahmedabad.

Mr. Singh, who was guest of honour at the event elaborated upon the measures that central government has initiated to to streamline the procedures for government clearances and approval for pharmaceutical and medical devices industry, as well as to ensure patient safety and safe clinical research practices.

Mr. Singh said that DCGI office was working hard to implement best regulatory practices in medical, bio-medical and medical devices industry. He urged the industry to 'adapt' the global trends and practices in order to survive in the competitive times.

Talking about the various initiatives that DCGI office has taken to improve the working of Mr Singh informed that 62 more posts of drug inspectors have been cleared which help in speedy clearing of procedures.

Mr Singh further stated that in order to bring more safety and transparency, registration of all the organizations involved in Clinical trails and research will be made mandatory and such organization will be audited adherence of protocols and laid down procedures for patient safety. He also informed that a registry of Clinical research organization will be made which will have important data like design of CR, target and sponsors details etc.

He announced that soon in consultation with Medical council of India , Pharmaco vigilance centers will be established in select medical colleges of India which will oversee the various aspects of safety and adherence of guidelines. The e-governance initiatives are also being stepped up to increase transparency in the procedures and clearances, encourage adaptation best practices in global environment.
